" Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. " 1 Timothy 4:12
The inter-generational aspects of our lives together in Christ give cause for our desire that our youth be seen and particpate as full partners in all our ministries. From acolytes, crucifers and lesson readers to those who contribute their skills in our musical ensembles and to those who help serve others in the community, our youth are very much a valued part of our parish.
We are blessed with several trained and highly motivated volunteer youth leaders who creatively explore in what ways our youth wish to interact, serving one another and those in the larger Lancaster area. They also take time to get to know one another, not just in their own age groupings, but also by sharing several overnight retreats, sleepovers and day excursions each year. One favorite annual event is a two day reteat at Camp Mack in Lebanon County.
Many personal celebrations become activities that good friends made in our youth programs come togther to share, making them even more meaningful to those involved.Everyone always seems willing to try a new activity and thus each individual's preferences have a chance to come forth.
During the course of the regular academic year, from September through May, junior high and senior high youth meet in separate gatherings to plan events, decide how they would like to particpate in parish life, or just to talk and share experiences. We strive at St Edwards to foster an environment where youth can grow together in Christ. They are given ever opportunity to experience parish life as contributors and not just observers, often taking on special projects all by themselves such as outdoor spring and fall refurbishing of the church grounds. Whether at the much anticpated annual excursion to the C R E A T I O N revival in western Pennsylvania or here at home in Lancaster, our youth form strong bonds and learn that by laughing (and, yes, sometimes even crying) together that they are not alone as they see and serve Our Lord in each other.
To say that our youth are our future is no cliche for our parish. They are so because they have become an integral and valued part of our present as well. Come join us and see...you will always be welcome !
